Frank Grillo joins season 2 of James Gunn’s Peacemaker

May 10, 2024 by Ricky Church

Even as James Gunn is busy filming Superman, he is still hard at work developing the second season of Peacemaker and other DC series and films. With Peacemaker having begun production, Gunn revealed Frank Grillo has joined the cast where he will reprise his role from the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr. in the new season.

Gunn announced the news through Instagram, saying “Pleased to announce the great @frankgrillo1 will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr – the role he’ll first play in animated form in Creature Commandos – throughout Season 2 of #Peacemaker. Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of…”

For those unaware, John Cena debuted as Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker in Gunn’s 2021 DC film The Suicide Squad when he was recruited onto the team by Rick Flag, played by Joel Kinnaman. However, Peacemaker was given secret orders and killed Flag in a fistfight after the team leader objected to the immorality of their true purpose of their mission. The consequences of this action and Peacemaker’s guilt were seen in the first season and will continue to echo into season two as Flag’s father seemingly comes looking for him.

Grillo will make his debut as Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, following a team of heroes based on classic monsters tasked with saving the world from supernatural and otherworldly threats. Starring alongside Grillo are David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, with Viola Davis and Steve Agee reprising their The Suicide Squad roles as Amanda Waller and John Economos respectively.

Creature Commandos will premiere on Max later this year while Peacemaker will presumably return some time in 2025.

Peacemaker sees John Cena reprising his role from The Suicide Squad as Christopher Smith, the titular ‘Peacemaker,’ alongside co-stars Steve Agee (John Economos) and Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt). New additions include Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Chukwudi Iwuji (News of the World), Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie), Annie Chang (Shades of Blue), Christopher Heyerdahl (Van Helsing), Elizabeth Ludlow (The Walking Dead), Rizwan Manji (Schitt’s Creek), Nhut Le (Raven’s Home), Alison Araya (Riverdale), Lenny Jacobson (For All Mankind), and Freddie Stroma (Bridgerton).
