Freaky director doubts sequel will happen, unsure about a Happy Death Day crossover

February 10, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Director Christopher Landon has been publicly vocal over the past couple of years about his desire to carry on the Happy Death Day horror franchise, however, it seems like the filmmaker isn’t as confident about the future of his body-swapping horror Freaky.

“In terms of a sequel to Freaky, you know, I don’t think it’s ever gonna happen, because I honestly don’t know if the studio has an appetite for a sequel,” Landon confirmed with ComingSoon. “I think they’re quite comfortable with it being a standalone movie, and to be honest, I am too, because we didn’t really have an idea for a sequel. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, this has to be the continuation of this story,’ whereas with the Happy Death Day movies they kind of had a whole life after that, but you never know.”

Although the future of Freaky is in doubt, Jessica Rothe, who plays Tree Gelbman in the Happy Death Day series, has expressed that she would love to see a crossover with Kathryn Newton’s Millie. However, Landon continued to weigh in his thoughts about the crossover and while he would love to see it, he is currently unsure how he could get both characters on-screen.

“You never know what can happen. I would love to see, you know, [Freaky’s] Millie and [Happy Death Day’s] Tree in a movie together. But I just don’t know what that movie is.”

Freaky follows Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies, Pokemon Detective Pikachu) as Millie, a teenager who finds herself swapping bodies with serial killer The Butcher (Vince Vaughn) after she becomes the target of the notorious murderer. The cast also includes Celeste O’Connor, Misha Osherovich, Uriah Shelton, Dana Drori, Katie Finneran, Alan Ruck.

Are you disappointed that Freaky won’t get a sequel? Would you like to see a crossover with Happy Death Day? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter @flickeringmyth…

Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton, Blockers, HBO’s Big Little Lies) is just trying to survive the bloodthirsty halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of The Butcher (Vince Vaughn), her town’s infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries.

When The Butcher’s mystical ancient dagger causes him and Millie to wake up in each other’s bodies, Millie learns that she has just 24 hours to get her body back before the switch becomes permanent and she’s trapped in the form of a middle-aged maniac forever. The only problem is she now looks like a towering psychopath who’s the target of a city-wide manhunt while The Butcher looks like her and has brought his appetite for carnage to Homecoming.

With some help from her friends—ultra-woke Nyla (Celeste O’Connor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife), ultra-fabulous Joshua (Misha Osherovich, The Goldfinch) and her crush Booker (Uriah Shelton, Enter the Warriors Gate)—Millie races against the clock to reverse the curse while The Butcher discovers that having a female teen body is the perfect cover for a little Homecoming killing spree.
