Garbage Pail Kids animated series coming to HBO Max from Danny McBride

May 26, 2021 by EJ Moreno

If you’re a lover of pop culture or a kid of the 80s, you know all about Garbage Pail Kids. The gross sticker trading card meant to mock Cabbage Patch Kids was all the rage and even led to a notoriously bad live-action movie in 1987. Well, they’re coming back to shock you again, but this time in a new animated update.

THR reports today that Danny McBride’s Rough House Pictures will team with Topps and Tornante to bring Garbage Pail Kids to a whole new generation. McBride, David Gordon Green, and Josh Bycel write and co-create the HBO Max series.

In the report, The Hollywood Reporter notes that McBride and Green both “have a love Garbage Pail Kids and Saturday morning cartoons.” So, the series is expected to have a family-friendly appeal, aiming to reach audiences of all ages. There’s no word if Danny McBride will voice a character in the series at the time of reporting.

The Tornante Company is owned by The Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner and usually acquires different media and entertainment companies. They already own Topps, the toy line behind the infamous trading cards, and the company has already produced hit animated series like BoJack Horseman and Tuca and Bertie.

Merging this with the minds of McBride & Green seems like a match made in heaven for OG fans and newcomers alike.
