Geoff Johns says Joss Whedon will start work on Batgirl in 2018

July 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros. is set to host its DC Films panel at the San Diego Comic-Con later today, with the expectation that the studio will announce the next slate of DC Extended Universe movies following the upcoming Justice League and Aquaman.

We’ve heard this week that Shazam! will be the next DC movie to go into production, and it seems we may be able to officially add Batgirl to the upcoming slate, with DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns telling IGN:

“We haven’t gone out there and said what our slate is, because we’ll do it when we’re ready and have the films we’re excited for, but for Batman, what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and it’s been way too long since we’ve seen, you know, an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, and it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year. And that’s just the start, we want to explore the Batman universe in a very big new way; Matt Reeves is coming on to do The Batman now and we don’t want to do the same thing that has been done before, we want to build it out just like we built it out in the comics.”

Whedon is of course currently working on Justice League, having stepped in to direct reshoots and complete post-production following the passing of Zack Snyder’s daughter. He’ll presumably follow this up by moving straight onto Batgirl, although it’s unclear whether that means he’ll be starting work on the script next year, or looking to move into production.
