Gerard Butler producing YA fantasy adaptation A Darker Shade of Magic

THR is reporting that Gerard Butler is teaming up with Neal Mortiz and Victoria Schwab to produce an adaptation of Schwab’s YA fantasy series A Darker Shade of Magic for Sony Pictures, who have snapped up the right after a bidding war.

A Darker Shade of Magic follows Kell, “a magician who has the ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city, in this case London. Kell can travel between four parallel worlds within London, including Grey London, where residents believe magic is a myth, Red London (where magic is revered), White London (where magic is battled over) and the dark Black London, where magic has overpowered the people. When Kell meets Delilah Bard, a London pickpocket, he’s whisked into a universe-hopping adventure.”

The 2015 book was followed by two sequels – A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light – and Sony is eyeing a potential trilogy of films, assuming the first is a success of course.

Butler has two films in post-production in the environmental disaster movie Geostorm and action thriller Hunter Killer. He is set to reprise the role of Mike Banning for Angel Has Fallen, and will appear in the psychological thriller Keepers, along with actioner Snow Ponies, which he joined earlier this month.
