Godzilla vs. Kong’s tone will be similar to Kong: Skull Island, according to Jordan Vogt-Roberts

September 9, 2017 by Jordan Jones

This is either going to be the best, or worst news you hear all day depending on where you stand with Kong: Skull Island. There seems to be two trains of thought here: 1) Kong: Skull Island is a refreshing change of course from the darker Godzilla reboot, or 2) the latest Kong sacrificed the emotional heft, and tone generated from 2014’s Godzilla to create a mindless Monster-Brawler.

Well, here’s hoping you fall into the former category as director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island, promises a similar vibe for Godzilla vs. Kong. In an interview with Collider, Vogt-Roberts revealed that he has had conversations with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard (You’re Next, Death Note) regarding the tone of the upcoming film, and it appears that they are on the same page:

“Talking to Adam made me so happy because he, in particular, really understands the kind of anime, manga, mech sensibility that I was trying to bring to Kong. He gets that and that was something that I fought so hard for and was so difficult to sort of realize to life through concept to execution with ILM [Industrial Light and Magic.] That’s one of the things I’m most proud of with him. I think he truly gets that and he truly wants to lean into this version of Kong that kind of was borne from my crazy and stupid video game brain.”

SEE ALSO: Godzilla vs. Kong will be “a massive monster brawl” (and will have a clear winner)

It stands to reason that a movie called Godzilla vs. Kong will probably do very well with Kong: Skull Island’s aesthetic. However, for those hoping for a return to the darker Kaiju world that Gareth Edward’s created, this will likely be met with some disappointment.

Godzilla vs. Kong is set for a May 22nd, 2020 release. Before then, we have Godzilla: King of the Monsters which is due to open on March 22nd 2019.
