Guillermo del Toro has an idea for a Jabba the Hutt Star Wars movie

July 14, 2015 by Gary Collinson

One of the earliest names mentioned as a possible contender to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens was that of Guillermo del Toro, the man behind cult favourites such as Blade II, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim.

The director subsequently revealed that he’d been contacted to sound out his interest, although he kindly rejected the approach in order to focus on his own original projects. Nevertheless, he has revealed one idea that he’s had for a Star Wars movie, which would revolve around the notorious gangster Jabba the Hutt.

“I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control,” del Toro told Yahoo (via Slash Film). “One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup, you know? … I just love the character.”

However, the filmmaker then went on to admit to Fandango that a Guillermo del Toro-directed Star Wars movie is not on the horizon any time soon, stating that: “My dance card is a little full. I would love to, but I think there are a lot of things to get to first.”

Would you like to see del Toro directing a Star Wars movie, and are you interested in exploring the rise of Jabba? Let us know in the comments below…
