Guillermo del Toro says he’s “not a superhero guy” but still open to more comic book movies

Guilermo del Toro has certainly built up plenty of comic book experience over the years, with Blade II, Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army on his C.V., not to mention several years of development on both an Incredible Hulk TV series and Justice League Dark movie, both of which ultimately failed to come to fruition.

Speaking to Comic Book, the filmmaker has discussed his interest in the genre, stating that he’s drawn more towards ‘monster’ characters and as such, has little interest in tackling a ‘traditional’ superhero movie as he’s simply “not a superhero guy.”

“Well, I co-wrote a whole screenplay on Justice League Dark for Warner Bros., so that’s your answer,” said del Toro when asked if he’s still keen to work on future comic book movies. “I love Deadman, I love Demon, I love Swamp Thing. Zatanna. That’s a universe, is one thing. I’m very attracted to that side of the DC Universe. But I’m not a superhero guy. For me to like a superhero, the superhero needs to be a monster. I’m not into those things, I’ve never been. I’m always in favor of monster narratives. That’s what I like. Or, I love noir. I love police, crime dramas. I love science fiction.”

There are of course plenty of monster-type characters in the superhero genre for the del Toro to play with should the opportunity come his way, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the Oscar-winning director could find himself involved with the DC Extended Universe or even the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point down the line.
