Gunpowder coming to HBO in December

Winter may have temporarily halted, but Kit Harington still has more to look forward to this yeah over at HBO. Harington’s miniseries Gunpowder, which premiered on BBC One last week, will be brought over to HBO in December and be made available to viewers through HBO On Demand, HBO Now and HBO Go.

Gunpowder is a three-episode miniseries detailing the famous Gunpowder Plot in 1605, where Guy Fawkes was captured as he attempted to blow up the House of Lords, assassinating King James I in the process. The first episode will premiere on Monday, December 18 at 10 PM EST with the subsequent episodes airing Tuesday, December 19 and Wednesday, December 20 at the same time. The miniseries was produced by Kudos in association with Thriker Films.

Game of Thrones‘ Harington actually has a familial connection to the plot; he is the descendent of Robert Catesby, the mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot. Harrington portrays Catesby and serves as an executive producer on the show. Harington made a quick statement on the news HBO will premiere his series.

“Three years ago, Daniel West and I conceived and began developing Gunpowder with Kudos and Ronan Bennett,” notes Harington. “We are now thrilled to share this unique story with the U.S. audience. I can’t think of a better place to do that than my home at HBO.”

Several others also made statements on the news. “We are delighted to offer a platform for a project that is so close to Kit Harington’s heart,” said Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programming. “Kit’s passion for and belief in Gunpowder are evident in every frame of the miniseries.”

“We are thrilled that HBO has come on board as our U.S. partner for this outstanding miniseries,” Cathy Payne, chief executive, Endemol Shine International, said. “It is a testament to the producers Kudos and Thriker Films and the amazing cast.”

Diederick Santer, CEO of Kudos, said, “Gunpowder is an explosive tale that has been hugely popular with BBC One audiences in the U.K. HBO is the ideal partner to bring this premium miniseries to viewers in the U.S., and with a magnificent cast and script, we expect the drama to be unmissable viewing stateside.”

Gunpowder is directed by J Blakeson and is written by Ronan Bennett.  Starring Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings), Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Peter Mullan (Top of the Lake), Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey), Edward Holcroft (Kingsman), Shaun Dooley (Broadchurch) and Robert Emms (Happy Valley).
