Harry Potter being rebooted as a decade-long TV series with J.K. Rowling executive producing

April 12, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Whispers had picked up pace in recent weeks, and now it is official: Warner Bros. Discovery will be rebooting the Harry Potter series alongside author and executive producer J.K. Rowling.

The series will stream worldwide on the newly-rebraned Max streaming service and is described as a decade-long faithful take on the beloved book series featuring an all new cast.

“My wife and I, we read [the Harry Potter books] to each of our three kids,” said WBD CEO David Zaslav making the announcment at today’s Max press conference. “It’s really moving, for ten consecutive years, people will see Harry Potter on HBO; I mean it’s really something.”

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” added J.K. Rowling.

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” stated Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

At the time of writing, there’s no further details on the series, save for the fact that Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts will executive produce alongside Rowling, while the film series’ David Heyman is also in talks to join as executive producer
