Inside Out 2 brings Joy to the box office with $295 million worldwide opening

June 17, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Inside Out 2 brought Joy to the box-office this weekend with a record-breaking $295 million worldwide bow.

Disney and Pixar‘s critically-acclaimed sequel (read our ★★★★ review here) exceeded expectations with a whopping $155 million in its first weekend of release at the domestic box-office, and was equally impressive at the international box office with $140 million, which helped it overhaul Frozen 2 ($135M) as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time.

Projected to earn between $80-$90 million, Inside Out 2 surpassed current 2024 champs Godzilla x Kong ($80M) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5M) to secure the biggest opening of the year, and in doing so became the first film since Barbie ($162M) to debut with $100M+.

It wasn’t just Pixar’s emotions doing the heavy lifting at the weekend box-office, because Bad Boys: Ride or Die had an impressive hold in its sophomore frame, taking $33 million. The fourth installment of the Sony Pictures franchise has amassed $112 million domestically and $214.6 million worldwide in just 10 days.

Elsewhere in the charts, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes earned $5.2 million in its sixth weekend of release, taking its total to $157.8 million domestically and $374.5 million worldwide, while The Garfield Movie and IF fared quite well in the face of Inside Out 2‘s family-flick dominance. The fat-cat earned $5 million for a domestic cume of $78 million and $217 million globally, while John Krasinski’s kids flick crawled across the $100 million mark with a weekend of $3.4 million, and $173 million worldwide.
