Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell tapped for Green Hornet reboot

June 24, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Universal Pictures were clearly as impressed as the rest of us with the job Leigh Whannell did on their Invisible Man remake, because the studio are in talks with the director to tackle another of their reboots in the form of The Green Hornet And Kato.

Sources have told Deadline that studio execs have been meeting with directors over the past couple of weeks, but that as soon as the Insidious helmer threw his name in the ring it was pretty much a done deal.

Universal acquired the rights to The Green Hornet in 2020 and already have a script that was written by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp ready to go, so will be keen to tie down a director who turned their $7M budgeted Invisible Man remake into a $143M grossing film-of-the-year contender.

The Green Hornet tells the story of newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who moonlights as crime-fighter with his trusty sidekick Kato. The character first emerged on radio in the 1930s, before branching out into film serials, comic books, a 1966 TV series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee, and a middling 2011 feature film starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou.

Are you a fan of The Green Hornet, or will you now check this out simply because Whannell will be calling the shots? Let us know what you think of this news by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
