James Gunn addresses recent Superman: Legacy castings

November 27, 2023 by EJ Moreno

With the Hollywood strikes now over, casting news on James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has ramped up this month as the DC Studios reboot prepares to begin production, and taking a moment out from prep, Gunn has been answering some fan questions regarding the casting process.

“Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría were all actually cast, contracts done, BEFORE the strike happened,” said Gunn. “And they were troopers about keeping the secret, which I’m sure was difficult.”

“When I’m casting a role I will sometimes see who fans have suggested online for folks I or my casting directors haven’t considered,” he adds. “Sometimes, they have good ideas, sometimes terrible ones. I don’t remember it actually leading to someone being cast, however.”

Superman: Legacy is gearing up to begin production any day, with the Hollywood strikes over and Gunn confirming the film will still make its July 2025 release date.

The official synopsis for Superman: Legacy states that the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
