James Gunn addresses Superman’s future and Henry Cavill rumours

December 13, 2022 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn took to Twitter to celebrate 44 years of Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie this past weekend while shading some nagging Superman rumors.

The past week has been quite interesting for DC, as the new era for the studio kicked off with some wild news. There was the cancellation of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, Michael Keaton’s Batman Beyond movie was dropped, and there was chatter of Gunn hating Henry Cavill… but more on that later.

First, the filmmaker took to social media to talk about Superman. As it was the 44th anniversary of Donner’s Superman film, Gunn used the moment to clarify his Superman plans. A fan asked Gunn on Twitter if we would see Superman returning to cinemas soon, and Gunn gave his thoughts, stating: “Yes, of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

With the founding member of the Justice League not having a pure solo film since 2013, it’s long overdue to see the Man of Steel back in the movies. But who could play the iconic hero? Will the familiar face of the Snyder era return?

Let’s look at the current or possible former Superman: Henry Cavill. Gunn addressed a growing rumor that he does not like Cavill. Some reports have said the new creative head of DC Studios was not a fan of Cavill’s work as Superman, leading many to think he’d soon be replaced by the new regime. The filmmaker was asked to comment on that claim and gave a simple “Sure: false” at first.

The original tweeter pressed the issue and claimed “he has heard from multiple people that Gunn doesn’t like Cavil,“ Gunn fired back: “So weird. You seemed so plugged in! Anyway, I just had forty people reach out to me to say you just got kicked out of your Mom’s basement. So sorry, man.”

The beginning era of James Gunn as DC Studios head has been filled with delighted fans, WTF moments, and some sassy tweets. Let’s see if Gunn and his co-chair Peter Safran can shape a new vision that will unite DC fans and shut down the malicious rumor mill that has plagued DC movies for years.
