James Gunn reveals Superman is “getting close” to wrapping

July 19, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Beginning this February, James Gunn began production on DC Studios’ relaunch film Superman. The new studio co-head will lead David Corenswet in his debut as the Man of Steel, and with one year to go until its release, the filmmaker has shared an update revealing he’s also almost done with filming.

The filmmaker took to Threads to celebrate the production. “#Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” he wrote. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago, and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets, and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city — not once, not twice, but dozens of times.”

He continued, “The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny, and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place. The pride you feel in being where Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster] first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much, it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations, restaurants, and gathering places that touched me.”

A fan asked if Superman was close to being done, and Gunn replied they still had “a couple [of] weeks left,” adding, “It’s a long shoot…but we’re getting close!!”

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Jonathan and Martha Kent.

Superman will be released on July 11th, 2025.
