James Gunn to direct “relaunched” Suicide Squad with new characters and actors

January 31, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Coming hot on the heels of the news that Ben Affleck is officially out as The Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, we now have word that another DC Extended Universe property is set for an overhaul in Suicide Squad.

Back in October it was announced that Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn had signed on to write the script for Suicide Squad 2, and it was said that this could be a “whole new take” rather than a direct sequel to the 2016 supervillain team-up.

Well, THR is now reporting that Gunn has just closed a deal to direct the movie, which is now going by the title The Suicide Squad, and is said to be “very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies [and] is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors.”

Quite what this means for the cast of the original film remains to be seen, but one would expect that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will avoid a recasting, given that Warner Bros. has just started filming on the spinoff Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

In addition to announcing Gunn as director, Warner Bros. has also set a release date of August 6th 2021 for The Suicide Squad, which is being produced by Charles Roven and Peter Safran, with Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder as executive producers.
