James Gunn’s Superman adds Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald to the Daily Planet crew

June 8, 2024 by Ricky Church

Just a day after casting SNL veteran Beck Bennett, James Gunn’s Superman has added Mikaela Hoover (Love Hard) and Christopher McDonald (Hacks) have joined the film to round out the Daily Planet newsroom.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hoover and McDonald will star as Daily Planet reporters Cat Grant and Ron Troupe. Cat Grant is the Planet’s gossip columnist and has often had her eyes set on Clark Kent despite his and Lois Lane’s relationship while Ron Troupe is one of the Planet’s most respected and experienced reporters. The two will work alongside David Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane.

The Daily Planet is a significant fixture in the Superman mythos, being the place Clark Kent decides to work to keep his ears out for trouble and where he and Lois first met. Filling out the rest of the Daily Planet cast is Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, the Planet’s ace photographer and one of Clark, Lois and Superman’s best friends, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, the Planet’s chief editor and Beckett as Steve Lombard, a self-centered reporter who works the Planet’s sports section.

Hoover has starred in small roles in several of Gunn’s other films, most notably Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 3 as Nova Prime’s assistant and the voice of Rocket’s friend Floor respectively, and The Suicide Squad.

McDonald is a well known actor with a career spanning over 40 years with Thelma & Louise, Leave It To Beaver, Flubber, Boardwalk Empire and Rosaline attached to his resume, but he’s perhaps most know for his role as Shooter McGavin in the Adam Sandler classic Happy Gilmore, a role he may reprise in the sequel. This is also not McDonald’s first experience with Superman either as he voiced the hero’s father Jor-El in Superman: The Animated Series and a much older Superman in Batman Beyond.

Filming on Superman is currently ongoing in Atlanta, Georgia ahead of the film’s summer 2025 release.

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Jonathan and Martha Kent.

Superman will be released on July 11th, 2025.
