December 2, 2025 by Amie Cranswick

StudioCanal has released a trailer and poster for James McAvoy’s directorial debut California Schemin’.

The film is based on Gavin Bain’s autobiography Straight Outta Scotland, and tells the story of how Gavin and Billy, two young aspiring musicians from Dundee, Scotland, convinced the music industry that they were a California rap duo to bag a record deal.

The cast includes Séamus McLean Ross (Outlander: Blood of My Blood), Samuel Bottomley (Anemone), Lucy Halliday (Blue Jean), Rebekah Murrell (One Day) and McAvoy. Watch the trailer below…

Based on the outrageous true story, CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN’ follows two aspiring Scottish MCs who devise an audacious scheme to achieve their dream of a record deal, by posing as Californian hip hop artists. As fame beckons and the lies pile up, their friendship is put to the test.
