Jenna Ortega hopes Neve Campbell’s Scream 6 absence won’t be an issue thanks to all the action and gore

November 14, 2022 by Gary Collinson

After relaunching the franchise to much success earlier this year, Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back for a sixth entry in the Scream franchise – although they are doing so without the series’ final girl after Neve Campbell turned down the opportunity to return as Sidney Prescott after failed contract negotiations.

With the latest entry now in post-production, returning star Jenna Ortega has taken a moment out of her promotional duties for Netflix’s Wednesday to share her thoughts on Sidney absence from the sequel, with the young actress telling Entertainment Tonight that she hopes audiences will be too distracted by what the film does offer.

“I feel like I can’t really speak too much on that just because it’s not necessarily my character,” said Ortega, who is reprising her role as Tara Carpenter in Scream 6 after making her series debut in the last entry. “But I will say there’s so much going on in this next one, that it’s so action-heavy and so gore-heavy, that I think you’re gonna be distracted almost.”

Although Neve Campbell won’t be back on screen, that doesn’t mean the film is suddenly going to ignore her character, with Ortega going on to add:

“It’s very clear, like, there are references to Sidney, of course. You know, it’s nice because there’s still a protectiveness in the script, and that’s something that the actors had naturally over her because obviously we respect her and we want the best for her. She’s missed and thought of.”

While Campbell is absent from the cast, Scream 6 sees Ortega joining returning Scream 2022 cast members Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, franchise mainstay Courteney Cox and Scream 4’s Hayden Panettiere. New additions include Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Dermot Mulroney (Hanna), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Liana Liberato (The Beach House), Devyn Nekoda (Ghostwriter), Josh Segarra (Arrow), Henry Czerny (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1) and Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

Scream 6 is set for release on March 31st 2023.
