Jessica Rothe hints that Happy Death Day 3 could still happen

April 28, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

In a move befitting of the franchise, Happy Death Day star Jessica Rothe has revealed that a third installment of the horror-comedy series might not be dead after all.

News emerged last year that Happy Death Day 3 probably wasn’t going to happen, with director Christopher Landon saying that it was due to the economics of business, but during the press rounds for her role in Bill Skarsgård action-flick Boy Kills World (read our ★★★ review here), Rothe was speaking to Screen Geek and gave fans hope that another sequel is on the way.

“Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out. We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed. I think Tree deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”

2017’s Happy Death Day was another success story for Blumhouse and Universal, bringing in $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget. Fans and critics praised it, and a sequel was released barely two years later. Happy Death Day 2U was released in 2019 and while it didn’t hit the same critical and commercial heights, the follow-up still grossed $64 million worldwide against a $9 million budget.
