Joe Dempsie hints that Gendry may have a pivotal role in Game of Thrones Season 8

April 5, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Remember those “Where’s Gendry?” jokes made a few years ago? The character sort of became the “Barb” of the Game of Thrones universe. Simply forgotten, and lost in the fray of the larger plot of the series. That is, until he arrived with a vengeance last season. Oh, and a giant hammer. Not only did Gendry make a triumphantly badass return, but he also joined the “Ghostbusters beyond The Wall” last season along with Jon Snow, Tormund Giantsbane, and others. Clearly, he’s come a long way from King’s Landing.

The good news is that we are getting more Gendry next season. The even better news is that, according to an interview with Digital Spy, Gendry may actually make it out of this thing alive. When asked about Season 8 the actor stated: “I’ve done well out of it this year, for sure”. He went on to say this:

“As with all these things, we never shoot in chronological order – so you might have people coming in at the beginning and at the end, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they make it all the way through! For me personally, the only real hope I had for the character was just that he would be there when the reckoning came. You got the sense – even back in season 3 – that this was a show that was building towards some incredible climax, so you just wanted to be there when it all happened… Not even necessarily just from a character point-of-view, [but] from a personal point of view – to be stood there on the set when they’re making that ending… that end game. So yeah, I’m very happy to be involved and be on set for season 8.”

Now, making it to the end doesn’t necessarily mean that Gendry lives, but it’s a good sign. Plus, given his lineage, Gendry has a decent claim to the Iron Throne. Depending on who survives, he may be the most suited for the job once the smoke clears.

Are you excited for Season 8? Are you still crying foul that we won’t get closure until 2019? Let us know in the comments!
