John Boyega is open to the idea of Star Wars return

July 20, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

As John Boyega does the rounds promoting his terrific turn in Netflix’s They Cloned Tyrone (read our ★★★★ review here), questions have inevitably turned to that galaxy far, far away, and it appears that the actor is open to returning to the Star Wars franchise.

Boyega has been vocal about the evolution of his Sequel Trilogy character Finn in previous interviews, criticising Disney in a 2020 chat with GQ by saying “do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good.”

Three years down the line and while those complaints remain valid, the actor has softened on the idea of returning to Star Wars. When asked by TechRadar about whether he’d be interested in reprising his role as Finn, the Stormtrooper turned resistance fighter, Boyega addressed his previous comments by saying: “That was a few years ago, so they were the subject of that particular project. But I’m open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I’m open to all opportunities.”

With Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker set to return in an an as-yet-untiled movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) and writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), which is set 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it feels like the perfect time to restore balance to the Force and give Boyega’s character the arc he deserves.
