John Cena teams with Taken director for action comedy Freelance

October 29, 2021 by Gary Collinson

2021 has been a big year for John Cena as he continues his transition from WWE superstar to movie star, with roles in Hulu’s hit comedy Vacation Friends along with blockbusters F9: The Fast Saga and The Suicide Squad.

Cena is currently shooting Matthew Vaughn’s (Kingsman) spy film Argylle, and has now added another project to his upcoming slate in Freelance, an action-comedy which is being directed by Taken helmer Pierre Morel.

As per Deadline, the $40 million-budgeted project will see Cena playing “a a special forces operator who decides to retire from the Army and start a family back in the states. After several years of mortgage payments, school drop-offs, backyard barbecues and trying to conform to life in suburbia, he decides to come out of retirement to take a gig providing security for a female journalist as she interviews a cruel dictator who may or may not have ordered the attack on him and his men. When a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, the three are forced to escape into the jungle where they must survive the elements, the military and one another.”
