John Hurt, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn and Kristin Scott Thomas join Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour, synopsis released

September 6, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in April it was announced that Gary Oldman is set to play British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, and now it has been announced that Focus Features and Working Title that the Joe Wright-directed drama is set for release on November 24th in the U.S., followed by a U.K. release on December 29th.

Oldman will be joined in the cast by John Hurt (The Last Panthers) as Neville Chamberlain, Lily James (Downton Abbey) as Churchill’s personal secretary, Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as King George VI, and Kristin Scott Thomas (Suite Francaise) as Churchill’s wife, Clementine.

“Everyone at Focus is proud to be the longtime home to Joe Wright and our partners at Working Title, and thrilled to once again be working with the gifted Anthony McCarten and the legendary Gary Oldman,” said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. “Darkest Hour is about a visionary leader who stood firm in the face of tremendous pressure to abandon his unique point of view on the world, so it is fitting that his story will be told by these visionary filmmakers.”

Here’s the official synopsis…

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
