Johnny Depp rumoured to be meeting with Marvel for Doctor Strange

January 14, 2014 by admin

Marvel might be pretty tied up at the moment with post-production on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy and pre-production on The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. However, according to Latino-Review, that isn’t stopping the studio from pushing ahead with its future projects, specifically Doctor Strange, with the site reporting that “Johnny Depp has taken a meeting with Marvel to discuss taking on the role” and “is said to be very interested in jumping onto the Marvel machine.”

While Latino-Review has posted a couple of Doctor Strange rumours that never materialised, having previously reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) was in line for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme, as well as claiming that the movie would be announced at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con International, it should be noted that the generally reliable Variety has picked up on the story, although the site claims that “such talks have yet to take place and any possibility of such a pairing is premature.”

Update – Now the even more reliable Deadline has chipped in on the story, claiming that “I’m told by Marvel moles there is really nothing to this rumor about Johnny Depp playing Steven Strange in Doctor Strange for Marvel Studios. The story’s being bannered by Variety online, but don’t dress for it. I’m told that Depp was approached eons ago, and it never went anywhere.” So, in fairness, you could argue that the original report was half right, seeing as Depp was approached “eons ago”, but don’t expect him to sign on the dotted line.

Doctor Strange is yet to be officially announced, although all signs point to it being one of Marvel’s two movies set to arrive in 2016, in which case we’ve probably got a bit of a wait before we find out who’ll be donning the cloak..
