Josh Gad to shrink the kids in Shrunk

May 15, 2019 by Gary Collinson

According to SlashFilm, Josh Gad is set to star in the lead role in Shrunk, a reboot/’legacy-quel’ to the Walt Disney Pictures 80s classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Shrunk is said to take place in the same world as the original movies, albeit in the present day, with Gad portraying a grown up version of Adam Szalinski, the son of Rick Moranis’ inventor Wayne Szalinski (the baby who was blown up to an enormous size in the 1992 sequel).

The site reports that the project was originally being eyed for the Disney+ streaming service, but the plan now is to aim for a theatrical release. The search is currently underway for a director.

Directed by Joe Johnston and released in 1989, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a huge hit at the box office, grossing $223 million from an $18 million budget. It spawned the 1992 sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and the straight-to-video 1997 follow-up Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, the latter of which remains Moranis’ last live-action movie role. Could we perhaps see him coming out of retirement for a cameo in Shrunk..?
