Kristen Stewart to star as writer & activist Susan Sontag

February 10, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Kristen Stewart has a strong track record with biopics, and she’s adding another to her list as Screen Daily reports Stewart is set to star as US writer, philosopher, and political activist Susan Sontag in an upcoming feature. The film will be directed by Kirsten Johnson and co-written by Johnson and Lisa Kron.

Producer Gabrielle Tana says of the project, “It will be a drama, but with a documentary aspect to it. Kirsten [Johnson] has a wonderful approach to storytelling, and this is reflective of that, so she will use documentary in it.”

Stewart is currently serving as the president of the international jury at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, one of the filming locations for the project. “We’re using Berlin as a moment to kick off the project and do documentary footage of Kristen as the head of the jury and talking to her about how she’s going to become Sontag,” said Tana.

The film is tentatively titled Sontag and looks to adapt the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography by Ben Moser. The book follows Sontag’s relationships and her struggles with her sexuality.

There was also a focus on her political activism and work that led to her creating essays and published novels, such as 1964’s Notes On ‘Camp – one of the most influential works to date.

Kristen Stewart recently starred in Spencer, the biopic of Princess Diana that stormed the awards season and put Stewart on a new level. Her accolades include a British Academy Film Award and a César Award, in addition to nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She was previously most famous for her work in Twilight, making her a global star.
