Long-unproduced Night of the Living Dead sequel reanimated

November 4, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Fifty years after Night of the Living Dead reinvented the zombie and launched its very own horror sub-genre that remains strong to this day, Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the 1968 cult classic is getting an “official” sequel – Night of the Living Dead Part II – which is based upon a script penned back in the 1970s.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Night of the Living Dead, the film was created by George A. Romero and John Russo, although the duo disagreed about where the series should head next, leading to a split. Romero went on to direct five sequels – Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead – while Russo penned the 1977 novel Return of the Living Dead, which was loosely adapted as its own feature film series.

Now, Living Dead Media has announced that it is dusting off its plans for Night of the Living Dead Part II, with a view to releasing the film in 2019:

“Night of the Living Dead’s place on the Mt. Rushmore of horror films is known by most horror fans and people all over the world,” reads a statement from Living Dead Media. “But, unknown to most is that in the 1970’s, the original writers and producers of Night of the Living Dead penned a sequel to their masterpiece. A sequel that inexplicably has gone unproduced for over forty years – until now. Living Dead Media has brushed away the dirt from this amazing follow up to a classic and brought together a great team to produce the new film.”
