Lucasfilm to start production on Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spinoff in January 2019

December 9, 2017 by Gary Collinson

After years of rumours, it was finally confirmed back in August that Lucasfilm is planning a Star Wars Anthology movie based upon the venerable Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, with the studio reportedly tapping  Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) to develop the project with a view to directing.

We’ve heard nothing about the project since – which is understandable given that Lucasfilm has plenty on its plate with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story, not to mention a director switch on Star Wars: Episode IX – but now we have a brief update courtesy of Omega Underground.

According to the site, Lucasfilm is eyeing a January 2019 start date on the movie at Pinewood Studios UK, which presumably means we’d see the film arriving in Lucasfilm’s as-yet-unrevealed 2020 slot.

As yet, there’s been no official confirmation that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as Kenobi, but it is expected, given that he’s expressed his interest in returning to the galaxy far, far away on several occasions.

Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has recently confirmed that the studio is now planning the next ten years of Star Wars post-Episode IX, which as we now know will also include Rian Johnson’s new trilogy. As for the other movies, we can only speculate, although there’s been rumours that the likes of Boba Fett, Yoda and even Jabba the Hutt are being lined up for solo films.
