Margot Robbie reflects on Babylon: “I still can’t figure out why people hated it”

December 2, 2024 by Gary Collinson

As Margot Robbie settles into motherhood, it seems the star has had some time to reflect on the past few years of her career, with one film in particular standing out with regards to its reception – and its not the box-office behemoth Barbie.

Speaking to the Talking Pictures Podcast (via Variety), Robbie agreed with host Ben Mankiewicz, who stated that he’d been confused by the polarizing response to Babylon, the Golden Age of Hollywood-set ensemble from acclaimed filmmaker Damien Chazelle.

“I am still saying that,” responded Robbie. “I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that The Shawshank Redemption’ was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?’”

Released in 2022, the lavish £80 million-budgeted film divided critics and audiences upon release in 2022 and tanked at the box office with just $15 million at the North American box office and $63 million worldwide. Not that it would have any negative impact on Robbie’s career however, with the actress and producer following it up with last year’s mega-hit Barbie before embarking on a maternity break.

Robbie will return to the screen this coming May alongside Colin Farrell in director Kogonada’s romantic fantasy A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and is gearing up to star in Emerald Fennell’s new take on Wuthering Heights.
