Mark Gatiss would like to make a Sherlock film with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman

April 15, 2024 by Ricky Church

Though several years have passed since the conclusion of Sherlock, interest in another series or a revival remains for the modern day imagining of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective. That interest is what made co-creator Mark Gatiss reveal he and Steven Moffat are still looking to bring Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes to the big screen in a feature film.

Speaking with Deadline at the Olivier Awards for his nominated role in The Motive and the Cue, for which he won, Gatiss was also asked about whether or not fans would ever see Sherlock return after he made a comment last year about potentially developing a feature film. Gatiss first said “you’ll have to ask Benedict and Martin” and adding “We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult.”

Sherlock starred Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson with Gatiss, who also served as a writer for the series, as Sherlock’s older and secretive brother Mycroft. Reimagining many of Doyle’s stories into the modern day setting, Sherlock became a popular hit and launched Cumberbatch’s career into a widely known actor.

The series ran for four seasons and a special which imagined Sherlock in the proper time period of Doyle’s stories. Also featuring in the cast were Rupert Graves as Detective Lastrade, Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson, Una Stubbs as Mrs. Hudson, Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper and Andrew Scott as Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty.

Last year Gatiss said a Sherlock feature film seemed “the natural thing to do,” but the chief problem, as he reiterated now, was aligning everyone’s schedule. Not only does Gatiss have his new mystery series Bookish coming soon, but both Cumberbatch and Freeman have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last few years with Cumberbatch starring as Doctor Strange and Freeman in a supporting role in the Black Panther films as well as starring in the TV series Breeders.
