Mark Hamill has revealed how the dark side vision in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was shot

December 13, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Mark Hamill, a legend of the Star Wars franchise, has explained how the dark side vision was pulled off in The Empire Strikes Back.

Mark Hamill is set to return as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker but it’s going to take quite something from Episode IX to match The Empire Strikes Back – many people’s favourite Star Wars movie.

One of the film’s most memorable moments is cerainly Luke’s dark side vision on Dagobah, where he stikes down Vader only to see his own face beneath the mask of his father. How was the scene pulled off? Well, Hamill took to Twitter to explain:

“Dissatisfied with the prop head of me they had made, we re-shot it with my real head pushed through an opening below the set. The hardest part was keeping my eyes open & not blinking as they wafted smoke in for atmosphere.”

It’s a pretty cool scene, that’s for sure. Especially when you think about the practical effects involved and the use of symbolism with Luke’s face in the mask foreshadowing the reveal of Vader as his father.

Hopefully, Episode IX will provide us with some memorable scenes of its own!
