Martin Scorsese circling Leonardo DiCaprio-led Frank Sinatra biopic

April 17, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Ol’ Blue Eyes is heading back to the big screen, with a biopic reportedly in the works.

Variety broke down a story discussing “ageless auteurs,” filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who still craft some explosive work as they age. In that piece, the publication teased Scorsese as possibly working on a brilliant new biopic about one of entertainment’s biggest names.

As Scorsese looks to finance his religious film, Life of Jesus, independently, Variety notes the legendary director is also eyeing a Frank Sinatra film. The trade claims that Sony is the “frontrunner to nab the project,” but we could see Apple wanting to stay in the Scorsese business after Killers of the Flower Moon.

If the film goes into production, Leonardo DiCaprio is said to play the singer, and Jennifer Lawrence will portray his second wife, actress Ava Gardner. There’s only one issue however: Tina Sinatra, the late crooner’s daughter, controls her father’s estate and hasn’t given her blessing to the film.

Frank Sinatra went solo in the 1940s, kickstarting a movement in the United States that would become known as “Sinatramania.” He’d become a mega-star during the 40s and 50s and would go on to sell an estimated 150 million record sales globally.

Sinatra married Nancy Barbato (Tina Sinatra’s mother) before leaving her for Ava Gardner. The film could touch on that, following a similar marital drama like Maestro or going the music biopic route like many others.

Stay tuned to Flickering Myth for any additional news on Scorsese’s Frank Sinatra biopic…
