Marvel developing Wonder Man series for Disney+ with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton

June 17, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It seems that Hollywood star Simon Williams is set to make his long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with THR reporting that Marvel Studios has tapped Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to develop a Wonder Man series for Disney+.

Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Don Heck, Simon Williams made his first appearance as an ion-powered supervillain in Avengers #9 but turned face after battling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes alongside Baron Zemo. He would go on to serve as members of the Avengers, West Coast Avengers, and Revengers at various points across his near-sixty year history, as well as developing strong ties with the characters of Vision and Wanda Maximoff after his brain waves were used by Ultron in the creation of the Vision.

The character of Wonder Man previously came close to making a cameo of sorts in the MCU previously, with Nathan Fillion posing as Simon Williams on a bunch of faux movie posters for a deleted scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Shang-Chi helmer Cretton will executive produce the series, while Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 30 Rock) has been brought in as Head Writer and showrunner. It’s not yet known at this point what specific take Marvel has for the character, but there is some unconfirmed talk of the series potentially being approached as a satire on Hollywood. Filming is expected to take place at some point in 2023.
