Marvel’s Black Widow tracking $80-$90 million domestic opening weekend

July 7, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Ahhhh… it feels good to be talking about box office again. Hot on the heels of the news that F9 has become the first Hollywood release to pass the $500 million worldwide mark since December 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there’s more potential good news for exhibitors by way of the tracking estimates for Marvel Studios’ Black Widow.

According to industry tracking estimates, the Scarlett Johansson-led solo movie is looking to pull in between $80 million and $90 million from its opening weekend in North America – a figure that would see it top F9’s $70 million debut for the biggest domestic opening weekend since Episode IX.

Should Black Widow reach projections, it would be Marvel Studios’ lowest opening since Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75.8 million), with only four other MCU movies opening lower (Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Ant-Man and The Incredible Hulk). However, given the circumstances with the pandemic, and the fact that the movie is also being released simultaneously on Disney+ through Premier Access, one would assume that any opening north of $75 million will be considered a big win.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov.
