Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger cancelled by Freeform

October 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

This probably won’t come as too much of a surprise given there’s been radio silence since its season two finale back in May, but Freeform has announced that it has opted against renewing its Marvel series Cloak & Dagger.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” read a statement from Freeform to Deadline. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

Premiering in 2018, Cloak & Dagger saw Aubrey Johnson and Olivia Holt starring in the title roles as Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen. Despite a decent start, season two ratings were down almost 40% on the first, making its cancellation all but inevitable. We will however see Johnson and Holt back in the roles one final time, with the pair set to guest star in the third season of Hulu’s Runaways.

The cancellation comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Marvel Television is undergoing a restructure, falling under the control of Marvel Studios supremo and MCU overseer Kevin Feige, as well as the recent news that the division has axed its planned Ghost Rider TV series.
