Marvel’s Doctor Strange 2 reportedly aiming for 2020 release

April 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

While Marvel is yet to announce any specific details on its plans post-Avengers: Endgame, beyond the Sony co-production Spider-Man: Far From Home, the studio had previously revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was aiming for a 2020 release, until James Gunn’s departure and subsequent return scuppered that plan.

Since then, the general assumption has been that Marvel will fill its May 1st 2020 and November 6th 2020 dates with Black Widow and The Eternals. However, according to Deadline, that may not be the case after all, as the trade is reporting that inside talk suggests that the studio is actually eyeing both Black Widow and Doctor Strange 2 for 2020.

Both director Scott Derrickson and Benedict Cumberbatch recently closed their deals to return for Doctor Strange 2, so a 2020 release is certainly a possibility, although a report back in November of last year claimed that the plan was to begin production in the spring of 2020 ahead of a May 2021 release.

Another possibility of course is that Marvel is now looking to release Black Widow, The Eternals and Doctor Strange 2 in the same year, sticking with the same three-movie release pattern we’ve seen in 2017, 2019 and 2019. Unfortunately, until we get an official announcement post-Endgame, all we can do is speculate…
