Marvel’s Kevin Feige on the possibility of adapting Secret Invasion

March 12, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Warning. Captain Marvel spoilers follow…

When it was first announced back at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 that Carol Danvers would be going up against the Skrull Empire in Captain Marvel, fans immediately began speculating about the prospect of a ‘Secret Invasion’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – perhaps as the next big arc for the MCU after Avengers: Endgame and Thanos.

If you’re unfamiliar with Secret Invasion, it was a big comic book event from 2008, whereby the shapeshifting Skrulls had embarked on a long-term invasion of Earth by assuming the identities of many of the Marvel Universe’s heroes.

Now, those who’ve seen Captain Marvel will know this seems a little unlikely at this point, although Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is refusing to rule out the possibility:

“I think like the Kree and like humanity, there are good Skrulls and there are bad Skrulls, but one of the things we wanted to do in this movie is, you know, don’t judge a book by its cover and tap into people’s preconceived notions of the pointy-eared green aliens being evil and subverting that. But I do think to continue fleshing them out and making them these three-dimensional actual beings, the Skrulls, you would encounter good ones and bad ones.”

Considering Captain Marvel takes place some 25 years in the past, it’s certainly possible that another group of Skrulls could have decided to make Earth their new home at some point in time. That being said, it may seem a little strange if it happens so soon after they’ve been portrayed in such a sympathetic light.

What are your thoughts on the Skrulls and Secret Invasion? Is it something you’d like to see in the MCU? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
