Mason Thames confirmed as Dick Grayson in DC’s Dynamic Duo movie

November 6, 2026 by Gary Collinson

Having been linked to the role back in September, DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran has confirmed that The Black Phone and How To Train Your Dragon actor Mason Thames will lend his voice to the character of Dick Grayson in DC Studios animated feature film Dynamic Duo.

“We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, to be part of DC Studios, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did,” said Safran in an interview with Collider (via Dark Horizons). “And he came in, and auditioned the shit out of it, and was awesome. He’s a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this. He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices, he came over with his dad at the time, and we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”

Co-produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios alongside Warner Bros. Animation and Swaybox Studios, Dynamic Duo is described as a blend of CGI, stop motion animation and puppetry, and will depict the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, a.k.a. the Robins. It remains to be seen whether the project is part of the shared ‘DC Universe’ (whereby actors portray their characters in both live action and animation), or a standalone ‘Elseworlds’ tale like The Batman.

Thames’ casting was originally revealed by scooper Jeff Sneider, whose initial report also pegged Logan Kim (The Walking Dead: Dead City) as Jason Todd and Marsai Martin (black-ish) as Barbara Gordon, with Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) and Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) said to have been offered the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman and the Red Hood gang leader respectively. At the time of writing, only Thames has been confirmed.

Dynamic Duo is set for release on June 30th 2028.
