Matthew Modine joins the Monsterverse’s Godzilla x Kong sequel

March 7, 2025 by Ricky Church

Another Stranger Things star is joining Legendary’s Monsterverse as Matthew Modine has been cast in the upcoming sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Grant Sputore will direct the Godzilla x Kong sequel from a script written by Dave Callaham. It will be “a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong, and an assortment of other Titans.” The sequel will introduce several new human characters as they band together with Godzilla and Kong to prevent another apocalyptic threat to the world.

Modine joins a cast that include Dan Stevens reprising his Godzilla x Kong role as Trapper, a veterinarian specializing in the Titans, and newcomers Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo. Modine is the second actor from Stranger Things to join the monster franchise after Millie Bobby Brown starred in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong.

The as-yet-untitled film is the next installment of Legendary’s Monsterverse, which began with 2014’s Godzilla and gradually built up to Godzilla and King Kong’s face off in Godzilla vs. Kong. Legendary has also expanded the franchise to the small screen with the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters which is both a prequel to and continuation of Monsterverse’s first Godzilla film. Last year Apple renewed Monarch for a second season, as well as revealing plans for multiple additional spinoff series.
