Michael Bay on Ambulance: “Some of the CGI is sh*t in this movie”

March 29, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Filmmaker Michael Bay has taken a rather unique approach to promoting his new film Ambulance, with the director offering up some rather candid comments about his displeasure with some of the CGI effects.

Speaking to French outlet Les Cinémas Pathé Gaumont about Ambulance and its practical effects and stunt sequences, Bay admitted that he was left disappointed by a couple of CGI shots, calling them “shit”.

All those explosions and cars flipping, that’s all real. That’s all live, real, ratchets,” said Bay (via Deadline). “It looks very dangerous [and] it could be very dangerous if you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. Most of it is real stunts. There’s very few blue screen shots on the movie. There’s not a lot of CGI. Some of the CGI is shit in this movie. There’s a couple shots that I wasn’t happy with, okay? Alright.”

At just $40 million, Ambulance has been produced on the fraction of the cost of a typical Michael Bay movie, and so it’s understandable really why the CGI isn’t quite at the level Bay is used to. Nevertheless, the film has got itself off to a solid start with critics and is currently sitting at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes – a career best for Bay as a director having surpassed 1996’s The Rock.

Over one day across the streets of L.A., three lives will change forever.

In this breakneck thriller from director-producer Michael Bay, decorated veteran Will Sharp (Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Candyman, The Matrix Resurrections), desperate for money to cover his wife’s medical bills, asks for help from the one person he knows he shouldn’t—his adoptive brother Danny (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac, Spider-Man: Far From Home). A charismatic career criminal, Danny instead offers him a score: the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history: $32 million. With his wife’s survival on the line, Will can’t say no.

But when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop clinging to life and ace EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Baby Driver) onboard. In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.

Ambulance is out now in the UK and opens in the US on April 8th.
