Michael Bay set to direct adaptation of classic video game Outrun

April 22, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Michael Bay has directed his fair share of impressive car chases over the course of his career, so it makes sense that Universal has tapped him up to helm the live-action adaptation of Sega’s classic arcade game Outrun.

With Minecraft and Mario collecting serious box-office coin over the past couple of years, Universal are looking to get in on the act, and according to Deadline, not only have they approached the blockbuster filmmaker to direct, but Sydney Sweeney is also in the passenger seat as producer. Jayson Rothwell (Silent Night) will write the script.

First released by Sega in September 1986, Outrun became the highest grossing arcade game of 1987, and was the developers most successful gaming cabinet of the entire decade. In Outrun players take control of a convertible Ferrari as they navigate a series of checkpoints in order to reach the finish line before the timer runs out. The game featured an innovative soundtrack, where users could select from three pieces of music whilst navigating the twists and turns of the race.

Think the opening of the otherwise terrible 6 Underground, or the orchestrated brilliance of the Bad Boys II freeway chase, and you have a good idea of what a Michael Bay-directed Outrun movie might look like.
