Michael Bay was pitched an R-rated, Tarantino-esque Bumblebee Transformers spinoff

December 9, 2016 by Gary Collinson

This past weekend we got our first glimpse of the next phase of the Transformers saga with the trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, the first offering to come out of Paramount’s ‘writers room’, which saw the studio assembling a team of top screenwriting talent to shape the future of the blockbuster franchise.

We already know that The Last Knight will be followed by a solo spinoff for the beloved Autobot Bumblebee, and during a visit to the set of the latest film, director Michael Bay revealed to Screen Rant that he’d been pitched a Tarantino-esque, R-rated take on the character.

“There’s actually one idea that would be really fun R-rated. With Bumblebee,” said Bay, who is behind the camera for the fifth time on the series with The Last Knight. “I don’t wanna say what, but it would be really fun. It could be fun. Very Quentin Tarantino.”

Of course, given that the Transformers franchise is geared towards kids, and has a major emphasis on licensing and merchandising, it’s unlikely we’ll ever get to see this R-rated take, and Bay echoed that sentiment by stating: “No, because Hasbro. I mean, you can’t really.”

Would you like to see an R-rated, Quentin Tarantino-style Transformers movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

The Bumblebee movie is set for release on June 8th 2018, with Transformers: The Last Knight opening on June 23rd 2017, and as as-yet-untitled Transformers movie also slated for June 28th 2019.
