Michael De Luca joins Suicide Squad 2 in producer role

January 12, 2018 by Ricky Church

As Warner Bros. continues to shake up its slate for the DC Extended Universe, the studio has added a new name to Suicide Squad 2. Michael De Luca has joined the film as a producer, partnering with Charles Roven to craft the sequel according to Variety.

Roven will remain the lead producer on the film and was reportedly enthusiastic to De Luca coming on board. This seems to point once again to WB’s shifting attitude towards a shared universe for the DC films by having individuals focusing on one project rather than one single voice in charge of several films.

The sequel to David Ayer’s film is said to be a top priority for WB at this time and is only one of two DC films entering production this year, the other being Shazam! with Zachary Levi starring and David F. Sandberg directing.

Other films De Luca has produced include some critically acclaimed and award winning films, such as The Social Network, Moneyball and Captain Phillips. Some of his most recent work include the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, which wraps up next month with Fifty Shades Freed, and the upcoming TV miniseries Hue 1968.

Suicide Squad 2 has been rumoured to begin production in March with The Accountant helmer Gavin O’Connor directing. Not much is known about the film, except that Will Smith and Margot Robbie are expected to reprise their roles as Deadshot and Harley Quinn respectively.

Original Suicide Squad director David Ayer is said to be developing Gotham City Sirens, a team-up film with Harley Quinn and other female villains from the Batman side of the DC universe, while WB also wants to develop a solo Harley movie that will be separate from the Suicide Squad franchise, as well as the planned Harley Quinn and The Joker spin-off.
