Michael Dougherty reveals that Trick ‘r Treat sequel is in “very active development”

October 3, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Halloween brings with it the carving of Jack-o’-lanterns, an abundance of candy, and usually an update on the sequel to Michael Dougherty’s cult-classic Trick ‘r Treat. So as the calendar spills into the month of ghouls and goblins we appear to be getting nearer to the long-overdue follow-up becoming a reality, with Dougherty announcing that while the movie hasn’t been confirmed, they were in “very active development.”

The Godzilla: King of the Monsters director first announced a sequel as far back as 2013, and had intended to make more anthology horror following his stint orchestrating Legendary’s MonsterVerse in 2017. Fast forward to 2022 and a screening of the original film at Beyond Fest, where Dougherty announced that he will once again work with Legendary to finally bring the sequel to life.

We can finally share the news! @Mike_Dougherty announced tonight that he’s in “active development” with @Legendary on the sequel for TRICK ‘R TREAT and that everyone wants it to happen. Get ready for more from Sam. #trickrtreat @trickrtreat @am_cinematheque pic.twitter.com/9BNEC13ZTg

Originally intended for a theatrical release in 2007, a number of delays and buzzy festival screenings only heightened the excitement for Trick ‘r Treat, which was eventually released straight-to-DVD back in 2007, and featured four Halloween-related stories, all of which featured an appearance from the mysterious trick-or-treater Sam.

Let us know whether you’d be excited for more Trick ‘r Treat, or whether you won’t be answering the door when it’s eventually released, by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
