Michael Fassbender talks Oscar nominations, Assassin’s Creed protagonist, and Steve Jobs flopping at the box office

Michael Fassbender sat down with the Wall Street Journal to discuss a number of topics related to both his Oscar-nominated performance in Steve Jobs and the upcoming video game adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. 

He notes that he had a lot of fun attending the ceremony for his first Oscar nomination (12 Years a Slave) with his family, even receiving the chance to meet many of his idols. The experience according to him is honoring and fun.

Fassbender was also asked if Steve Jobs got a fair shake at the box office, replying “It’s as fair as it can be. People chose to go see it or not, that’s as fair as it can be. I’m not sure why people go see certain films over other films. A lot of the times in the cinema it helps if it’s an event of some sorts. You have to see that film at the cinema. There are a lot of options. People work very hard, long hours, come home, and they have good home entertainment centers. But I have no idea to be honest.”

Shifting gears, Assassin’s Creed (which recently finished shooting Friday) will be the next time we see Fassbender on the big screen, who commented that the blockbuster’s modern day protagonist Callum “is an outsider. He’s been institutionalized from his early teens. He’s a little bit of a lost soul of sorts. He starts to identify [his] lineage and where he comes from in a way.”

Assassin’s Creed is set for release on December 21st 2016. The film reunites Fassbender with Macbeth director Justin Kurzel and co-star Marion Cotillard, while the cast also includes Michael K. Williams (Ghostbusters), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brendan Gleeson (Calvary) and Ariane Labed (The Lobster).
