Michael Shannon calls Man of Steel a character study, says The Flash’s Zod isn’t “quite satisfying”

June 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Regarding General Zod, it seems like Michael Shannon prefers the original version we saw in Man Of Steel over his upcoming turn in The Flash.

Shannon recently spoke to Collider about his time as the Superman/Supergirl villain and discussed what he feels is the difference between the Zods we see in both films. For Shannon, it goes down to how it feels as a performer bringing the role to life.

The actor tells Collider, “Yeah. I’m not gonna lie; it wasn’t quite satisfying for me as an actor. These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!'”

Shannon looks at the difference between this film and his first outing, 2013’s Man Of Steel. He reveals, “It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was. Whether people think that’s crazy or not, I don’t even care. I really felt like Man of Steel was actually a pretty sophisticated story. I feel like The Flash is too, but it’s not Zod’s story. I’m basically there to present a challenge.”

As for The Flash, Shannon feels the reason to see the film is the lead performer, Ezra Miller. The actor notes, “Honestly, to me, it’s all about Ezra [Miller]. I just think Ezra is a fascinating performer and actor. I can’t wait to see this performance. It’s a huge challenge. I don’t wanna give anything away, but what Ezra has to do in this movie is pretty crazy, and I think [they’re] up for the task.”

He adds, “I know a lot of times, with movies like this, people are excited about the big set pieces or the effects, but for me, it’s always about performance. I don’t care whether it’s an Ingmar Bergman film or the Avengers. It’s always about performance.”

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti (It) and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (Batman), Sasha Calle (Supergirl), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Antje Traue (Faora-Ul), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ron Livingston (Henry Allen), and Maribel Verdu (Nora Allen).

The Flash is set for release on June 16th, 2023.
