Milly Alcock is officially DC’s new Supergirl

January 30, 2024 by Ricky Church

We officially have a new Girl of Steel. Superman: Legacy writer/director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has announced House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock has been cast in the role of Supergirl, where she will reportedly first appear in Superman: Legacy before headlining her own film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Gunn had been auditioning several actresses for the role and just a few days ago it had come down to Alcock and Meg Donnelly, who funny enough voices Supergirl in the recent DC animated films Legion of Super-Heroes and the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy.

Today, though, the role was officially given to Alcock, who Gunn said was “blown away” by her audition and is “Kara as envisioned by [Tom King], [Bilquis Evely] and Ana Nogueira.” You can read his full statement from Instagram below.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based off the comic miniseries of the same name by writer Tom King and Bilquis Evely with Ana Nogueira adapting it into a screenplay. The series followed Supergirl on a cosmic journey as she and a young girl hunt the dangerous man who murdered the girl’s father across the galaxy while Kara comes to grips with her own trauma as one of the few Kryptonian survivors after her home planet’s destruction. As of now there is no director attached to the film.

When Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was first announced, Gunn said “In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

If Alcock does indeed make her DC debut as Supergirl in Superman: Legacy, it will be just as Clark Kent/Superman is coming to terms with his own Kryptonian heritage after being raised a human all his life and donning the S-sigil and red cape to become one of Earth’s greatest superheroes. Superman will be played by David Corenswet for a summer 2025 release.

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.
