Miranda Otto to reprise Éowyn role in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime, Brian Cox and more join cast

June 16, 2022 by Ricky Church

New Line and Warner Bros. Animation’s anime prequel The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has announced its full cast. Per Deadline, Miranda Otto will reprise her Lord of the Rings role as Éowyn to narrate the film while Brian Cox (Succession) and Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) lead the voice cast as Rohan’s king Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Hera respectively.

War of the Rohirrim is “set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Hera, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.”

Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) will provide the voice of Wulf. Also starring will be Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (World on Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (The Witcher), Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation), Bilal Hasna (Sparks) and Janine Duvitski (Benidorm).

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045) and based on information from J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices in Return of the King. The script was written byPhoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou based off a story by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Philippa Boyens, one of the screenwriters for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is executive producing with Joseph Chou (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) producing. Also included in the creative team for the animation are The Lord of the Rings Oscar winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor and Tolkien illustrator John Howe with Sola Entertainment developing the animation.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be released April 12th, 2024.
