Mortal Kombat director says he tried to avoid using green screen as much as possible

March 19, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Ahead of its release next month, Simon McQuoid, the director of the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, has revealed that he tried to avoid using green screen as much as possible.

“I don’t like too much green screen,” McQuoid said during a group interview ahead of SXSW (via IGN).” Even then there is a bit of it in the film, you’ll see some things just couldn’t avoid, but I try and avoid it and I try and make stuff.”

McQuoid later added that filming the movie as cinematically as possible “felt right” for what he wanted to do with the movie. “And so, this I felt very privileged to have this opportunity to sort of bring these beloved characters to life and respect the material and turn it into this big movie.”

Earlier this month, Todd Garner, who is one of the producers of the highly-anticipated reboot, revealed that the goal of the reboot is to try to “make the most badass fighting movie that’s ever been shot.”

“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat is scheduled for a simultaneous release in theatres and on HBO Max this April 16th and stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; Laura Brent as Allison Young; and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.
